Hebron

헤브론 חֶבְרוֹן

A highland town in the hill country of Judah by the oaks of Mamre. Abraham built an altar and lived there, and Sarah and Abraham were buried in the cave of Machpelah. Numbers 13:22 has the spies come to it going up by the South: Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there, and it was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. Joshua 10:3 names Hoham king of Hebron, 10:5 counts the king of Hebron among the five kings of the Amorites and 10:23 among those five kings brought out of the cave, and at 10:36–37 Joshua goes up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron, and they fight against it, take it, and strike it with the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities, and all the souls who were in it, and he leaves no one remaining. Joshua 14:13–15 says that Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron for an inheritance, and that Hebron became Caleb’s inheritance to this day; “Now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba, after the greatest man among the Anakim.” Joshua 20:7 says that Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron) in the hill country of Judah was set apart; 21:11–13 says that Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), with its pasture lands around it, was given to the children of Aaron, but the fields of the city and its villages to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession, and calls Hebron the city of refuge for the man slayer. 2 Samuel 2:1–3 says that David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?”, and the LORD said to him, “Go up”, that David said, “Where shall I go up?”, and he said, “To Hebron”, and that David went up there with his two wives and brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household, and they lived in the cities of Hebron; 2:4 says, “The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah”; and 2:11 says, “The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.” 2 Samuel 3:2–5 says that sons were born to David in Hebron; 3:27 that when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate and struck him there, so that he died; 3:32 that they buried Abner in Hebron; 4:9–12 that David’s young men killed Rechab and Baanah his brother, cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron, and that the head of Ishbosheth was buried in Abner’s grave in Hebron; and 5:1–5 that all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron and anointed David king over Israel, and that in Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months. 2 Samuel 15:7–10 says that Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the LORD, in Hebron”; that the king said to him, “Go in peace”, and he arose and went to Hebron; and that Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron!’”

1Then all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

2In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. The LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’”

3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, according to the LORD’s word by Samuel.

  • 1CH 12:23–37, engwebp

23These are the numbers of the heads of those who were armed for war, who came to David to Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the LORD’s word.

24The children of Judah who bore shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred, armed for war.

25Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valor for the war: seven thousand one hundred.

26Of the children of Levi: four thousand six hundred.

27Jehoiada was the leader of the household of Aaron; and with him were three thousand seven hundred,

28and Zadok, a young man mighty of valor, and of his father’s house twenty-two captains.

29Of the children of Benjamin, Saul’s relatives: three thousand, for until then, the greatest part of them had kept their allegiance to Saul’s house.

30Of the children of Ephraim: twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers’ houses.

31Of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand, who were mentioned by name, to come and make David king.

38All these were men of war who could order the battle array, and came with a perfect heart to Hebron to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

39They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had supplied provisions for them.

40Moreover those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought bread on donkeys, on camels, on mules, and on oxen: supplies of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep in abundance; for there was joy in Israel.

1After this, David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” The LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”

2So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

3David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.

4The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

  • 2SA 2:8–11, engwebp

8Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

9He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

10Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

11The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

  • 2SA 2:29–32, engwebp

29Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

30Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen men of David’s and Asahel were missing.

31But David’s servants had struck Benjamin and Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.

32They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.

  • 2SA 3:2–5, engwebp

    2Sons were born to David in Hebron. His firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

    3and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

    4and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

5and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

  • 2SA 3:17–21, engwebp

17Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.

18Now then do it! For the LORD has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’”

19Abner also spoke in the ears of Benjamin; and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.

20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

21Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

  • 2SA 3:22–27, engwebp

22Behold, David’s servants and Joab came from a raid and brought in a great plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

23When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”

24Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is already gone?

25You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”

26When Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.

27When Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died for the blood of Asahel his brother.

  • 2SA 3:31–35, engwebp

31David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn in front of Abner.” King David followed the bier.

32They buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at Abner’s grave; and all the people wept.

33The king lamented for Abner, and said, “Should Abner die as a fool dies?

34Your hands weren’t bound, and your feet weren’t put into fetters. As a man falls before the children of iniquity, so you fell.” All the people wept again over him.

35All the people came to urge David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else, until the sun goes down.”

  • 2SA 4:1–3, engwebp

1When Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.

    2Saul’s son had two men who were captains of raiding bands. The name of one was Baanah and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin (for Beeroth also is considered a part of Benjamin;

3and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and have lived as foreigners there until today).

  • 2SA 4:5–8, engwebp

5The sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went out and came at about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth as he took his rest at noon.

6They came there into the middle of the house as though they would have fetched wheat, and they struck him in the body; and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.

7Now when they came into the house as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him, killed him, beheaded him, and took his head, and went by the way of the Arabah all night.

8They brought the head of Ishbosheth to David to Hebron, and said to the king, “Behold, the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life! The LORD has avenged my lord the king today of Saul and of his offspring.”

  • 2SA 4:9–12, engwebp

9David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

10when someone told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ thinking that he brought good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news.

11How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, should I not now require his blood from your hand, and rid the earth of you?”

12David commanded his young men, and they killed them, cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth and buried it in Abner’s grave in Hebron.

  • 2SA 5:1–3, engwebp

1Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

2In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led Israel out and in. The LORD said to you, ‘You will be shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be prince over Israel.’”

3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel.

7At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the LORD, in Hebron.

8For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the LORD shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.’”

9The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.

10But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron!’”

11Two hundred men went with Absalom out of Jerusalem, who were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they didn’t know anything.

12Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Absalom.

1Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,

2they were very afraid, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.

3Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4“Come up to me and help me. Let’s strike Gibeon; for they have made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.”

5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

23They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

24When they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, “Come near. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.” They came near, and put their feet on their necks.

25Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight.”

26Afterward Joshua struck them, put them to death, and hanged them on five trees. They were hanging on the trees until the evening.

Joshua’s Juttah, Gibeon, Elteke and Gibbethon are not named in 1 Chronicles 6. 1 Chronicles 6:69 names Aijalon and Gath Rimmon after the cities given out of the tribe of Ephraim, where Joshua 21:23–24 gives the two out of the tribe of Dan, and 1 Chronicles 6 does not name Dan. 1 Chronicles 6:57 and 6:67 open their cities with “the cities of refuge”, where Joshua 21 calls Hebron, Shechem, Golan, Kedesh in Galilee and Ramoth in Gilead the city of refuge for the man slayer. 1 Chronicles 6:60 gives thirteen, 6:61 ten and 6:63 twelve, and the names of 6:54–60, 6:66–70 and 6:77–81 do not reach those numbers. This collection records each book’s list as its verses give it, links only the same names, and does not decide how the two lists fit together.
